Councillors of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District observed a minute’s silence today in tribute to the late Liam McCloskey.

Mr McCloskey, a former Fianna Fáil councillor, was laid to rest this morning in Columba’s Church Cemetery, Drumoghill.

He dedicated much of his life to activism and community life, having served in the Letterkenny Urban District Council for 15 years from 1979.

A former Principal of Drumoghill National School, Mr McCloskey was also appointed the national president of the INTO. He also worked with the Society of St Vincent de Paul and the Donegal Leprosy Fund.

“Liam was someone who was very much involved in the community for many years,” said Fianna Fáil Cllr Ciaran Brogan, who proposed the minute’s silence this afternoon.

“He was someone who made a huge contribution in so many ways.”

The INTO also expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of Liam McCloskey on the sad news of his passing. INTO President, Carmel Browne attended the funeral on behalf of the organisation.

Mr McCloskey is survived by his daughters Eithne, Bernadette, Orla Foster and Derbhle Gould, sons Pearse, Enda, Garvan and Conor, 19 grandchildren, brother John (Letterkenny), sister MaryEllen (Nottingham, England) and wider family circle. He is predeceased by his wife Mary, brothers and sisters Eddie, Bridie, Anton, Paddy, Phia and Annie.

May he Rest in Peace.
