The Irish Coast Guard has confirmed that the search for a missing Donegal kayaker has moved to a search and recovery mission.

Low water searches resumed on Tuesday off the west coast of the county.

The man has been named locally as Paul Buchanan, from Ramelton, who has been missing since last Thursday since setting out on a kayaking trip from Magheragallon pier in Gweedore.

A spokesperson said: “The Coast Guard are coordinating declared maritime resources in support of An Garda Siochana missing person search operations.”

“The Irish Coast Guard would like to express condolences to the families of those involved.”

A rosary service took place in St Mary’s Church in Ramelton on Tuesday evening to pray for Paul’s return.

The major multi-agency search operation has involved shoreline searches, boats, helicopters and drone searches.

The agencies involved include Bunbeg Coast Guard Unit using Boat, Drone and Shore Searches, Aranmore RNLI All Weather Boat, Tory Island Coast Guard, Lough Swilly RNLI, R118 Sligo based helicopter, R116 Dublin based helicopter, R199 UK Prestwick based helicopter and Aer Corp Casa.
