Popular Inishowen man appointed Garda Inspector in Glenties

A Garda Sergeant from Clonmany has been promoted to the rank of Inspector and will be based in Glenties.

Newly-appointed Inspector Sean McDaid will replace the outgoing Inspector Rosaleen Logue from this week in the Glenties Garda District.

The Inishowen native has been a Sergeant based at Buncrana Garda Station most recently and has acted as the court presenter at sittings of the local District Court.

At last week’s sitting of Buncrana District Court, tributes were paid to Inspector McDaid. Inspector Paul Gallagher told the court of the promotion and said he wished to convey his own congratulations and that of the force.

Buncrana-based solicitor Ciaran Mac Lochlainn said Inspector McDaid was a very experienced officer with whom he had built a solid working relationship.

Before being transferred to Buncrana, where he was stationed for eight years, Inspector McDaid previously worked in Dublin and Ballyshannon.

“Glenties’ gain is Buncrana’s loss,” Mr Mac Lochlainn said. “He has a great insight into the backgrounds of the young people who are before the courts and he is able to deal with matters in a very fair and open manner.

“He is big into the GAA and has been involved in refereeing too. He is well respected in his position and he will be a loss to Buncrana, no doubt.

“Hopefully he will make his way back to Inishowen.”

A motorbike enthusiast, Inspector McDaid was previously a member of the Traffic Corps.

Inspector McDaid said he was looking forward to the new role, if not the daily Clonmany-Meenaroy journey.

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham also paid tribute and wished Inspector McDaid well in his new role.

Sergeant Emmet Brady will be the court presenter at Buncrana District Court while the Buncrana Garda District is also set to have a new inspector.

Inspector Johnny Sweeney has been newly promoted and will fill the void left by Inspector McDaid. Inspector Sweeney, a former Buncrana-based sergeant, was previously a Detective Sergeant in the Letterkenny Garda District.
