Tir Chonaill AC’s Fintan Dewhirst has been nominated for a national U20 Athlete of the Year Award.

It was confirmed today that the Glenties man has been shortlisted alongside four other athletes from around the country.

The highlight of his season was when he led Ireland’s 400m hurdles team at the World U20 Championships in Peru earlier this year.

He is one of three Donegal runners in the shakeup at this year’s 123.ie National Athletics Awards which will be held on November 20th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santry, Dublin. Olympians Mark English and Kelly McGrory have also been shortlisted.

Laghy native McGrory, another Tir Chonaill AC athlete, gets the nomination as being a member of the successful Irish Women’s 4x400m team that reached the final of the Paris Olympics.

Letterkenny’s Mark English has also been nominated for Middle Distance Athlete of the Year. The Finn Valley AC runner had another successful year, breaking the Irish 800m record numerous times. English also finished 6th in his 800m Olympic semi-final at this year’s Olympics, just narrowly missing out on a spot in the final.

This year’s awards will celebrate the many successes of Irish athletes during the season, while also commemorating the exceptional volunteer base who are the bedrock of the sport. The Athlete of the Year will be selected from the athletes named as winners of the U20, Middle Distance, Endurance, Sprints & Hurdles, and Field categories.
