Since early morning, Donegal Gardaí have been conducting a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation which will run throughout the Bank Holiday weekend.
The action commenced at 7am and will continue until 7am on Tuesday.
Fifteen people have been killed on Donegal’s roads so far this year, compared to ten for all of last year. The month between August 19 and September 18 was particularly bleak, with a total of six people having lost their lives in the county.
Bank Holiday Weekends are one of the busiest periods on Irish roads. They are also one of the spells during which road users are at the highest risk of being involved in a fatal or serious road traffic collision.
“An Garda Síochána is appealing to all those that will be taking to the roads this long weekend to slow down, take extra caution and to give your driving your full attention,” a garda spokesperson said.
Nationally, to date, 143 people have lost their lives in road traffic collisions on Irish roads.
