The Donegal Mountain Rescue Team (DMRT) is currently busy training up their new volunteers.
Recently, they have been revisiting navigation for their probationary members.
“We began a short while ago, tracking our position and navigating across certain sections of Lough Salt, familiarising map and compass reading during the day,” a DMRT spokesperson said.
Yesterday evening, they stepped out into the dark to repeat the same process, demonstrating the dramatic difference of doing these tasks without natural light and instead by torch light.
“This is another essential part of our training and can be quite thrilling to practice, relying purely on your own knowledge and capabilities regarding navigation and map reading. There is no room for error on the hill, particularly in the dark.”
DMRT provides an emergency response, remote environment and extreme terrain, search and rescue service for the County of Donegal. The team is comprised completely of volunteers who are on 24 hour call, 365 days of the year.
