Manorcunningham Kurling Club wins Jean Wilson Memorial Trophy

Manorcunningham Kurling Club has claimed the inaugural Jean Wilson Memorial Trophy.

This victory not only highlights the club’s dedication but also serves as a meaningful tribute to the late Jean Wilson, a beloved figure who played a key role in establishing kurling in Donegal.

Introduced last year in memory of Jean Wilson, who passed away in 2021, the trophy honours Jean’s legacy as the founder of the Raphoe Kurling Club and her profound impact on kurling throughout Donegal.

Her passion for the sport and her warm, caring nature touched the lives of many, making this award a fitting tribute to her contributions.

Lorna Wilson, Jean’s daughter, along with her granddaughters Jessica and Sarah, presented the trophy to Manorcunningham Kurling Club Captain Virginia McLoone and the delighted club members.

Reflecting on her mother’s love for kurling, Lorna said, “There really is a lifestyle attached to kurling. Jean got so much out of it—from new friendships to an active social life.she gained a new buzz for life that she didn’t have before.”‘

For club members like Evelyn Kee, kurling has been equally transformative. Evelyn, who lost her husband, shared how joining the club has helped her through difficult times.

“My good friend Mary Tinney asked me to come along, and when I did, everyone made me feel so welcome. They don’t even know how much they helped me.

“I didn’t want to do anything, didn’t want to leave the house, but they really brought me out of my shell and helped me through it. Now, I’m never in the house and love getting out and mixing with people. It’s opened up a whole new life for me,” she said.

As Donegal Sports Partnership prepares to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Donegal Kurling League in the New Year, Manorcunningham Kurling Club’s win underscores the strength and vibrancy of the kurling community.

With over 150 participants across eight teams, kurling has become one of the largest active seniors programmes in the county.

Jean Wilson’s legacy lives on through this vibrant league, and Manor Kurling Club’s achievement serves as a lasting reminder of the sport’s power to bring people together in friendship, sport, and community spirit.

Karen Guthrie, Community Sports Development Officer with Donegal Sports Partnership, encourages anyone interested in joining a kurling club to reach out to her at karen@activedonegal.com or call 074 911 6736.
