A large crowd gathered for Red Hugh O’Donnell’s birthday in Lifford this afternoon.
A parade through the streets of Lifford formed one part of a number of events celebrating one of Donegal’s most historical figures.
Groups representing Red Hugh O’Donnell and Hugh O’Neill marched and met at the Lifford Bridge, before proceeding to the Lifford Courthouse for a ceremony.
They then went onwards to Mongalvin Castle near St Johnston, where Eddie Crawford from the Red Hugh O’Donnell Association provided a fascinating account of the castle’s history and its strategic influence in the time of the O’Donnells.
Celebrations then continued with refreshments and a traditional Irish music session at Maggie’s Tavern.
Thanks to Joe Boland of NW Newspix for these shots from the day’s events.
