Volunteers sought to help combat loneliness through Cara House Befriending Service

Cara House Family Resource Centre is seeking volunteers to help support the expansion of its Befriending Service, designed to support the mental health and wellbeing of older and vulnerable adults in the community.

Founded by Susan McCauley in 2004, Cara House became a Family Resource Centre in 2008 and has since served as a vital hub for social inclusion, community support, and enriched living. It offers a range of onsite community education programs for adults, a drop-in facility, and an affordable children’s centre.

In partnership with the HSE Mental Health and Older People Services, Cara House provides resources such as Helping Hands, home-delivered meals, and the Befriending Service. These services enhance the lives of service users and support the unique needs of the local community.

The Befriending Service is now seeking volunteers for one-on-one home visits and small group chats to help reduce isolation and foster a sense of community. Volunteers will receive induction training to ensure they create a welcoming environment of trust and openness.

“Our aim is to help older adults live well within their homes and communities through services like our Befriending Service,” said Project Manager Martina McGinty.

“The impact of COVID-19 has left a lasting effect on many older adults, and we’re here to support them through in-home visits or community integration. Our new Active Age Coordinator, Katie, is available to assist family members or friends who could benefit from our services.”

Post-pandemic support is essential as many older people have experienced isolation and loneliness, particularly with Ireland’s aging population on the rise. According to the CSO, there are currently over 830,000 people over 65 in Ireland, up from 589,500 a decade ago.

Family Resource Centres like Cara House are essential in fostering community-based support and promoting individual and family wellbeing. For those unable to participate in face-to-face visits, Cara House also offers telephone-based support to ensure accessible engagement for all.

For more information on volunteering with the Befriending Service, please contact Katie McGee, Active Age Coordinator, at 083 863 8315 or via email at befriending@carahouse.ie
