Anger over mess and destruction at Dunfanaghy beach

A Donegal councillor has demanded action against litter and damage caused at Killahoey beach over the weekend.

A huge volume of rubbish was left at the beach on Sunday morning and sand dunes were allegedly damaged by 4×4 vehicles driving over them.

Independent Cllr Michael McClafferty said there was widespread anger in the area.

The beach is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Cllr McClafferty said “it’s very annoying to those seeking planning nearby and can’t get it on SAC areas etc.

“But others can wreak havoc at will on the dunes, driving over them with jeeps, quads etc., and worse, using them as toilets with all sorts now found in these dunes. It’s a disgrace.”

Cllr McClafferty urged the council to look at the issues and add fencing or signage urgently.

“Unless something is done I’m afraid this is a free for all,” he said.
