Riverine project going ahead at last with €16.7m allocation

The long-awaited Riverine Park project has today been awarded €16.7 million from PEACEPLUS funding.

The major project has seen a series of challenges in recent years, but has today secured a lifeline through PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The cross-border project for Lifford and Strabane will include the creation of 30 acres of parklands and a new community pavilion building, developed through a partnership between Donegal County Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The shared space would be linked by a pedestrian and cycle bridge that will span across the river, representing a physical and symbolic link in connecting the communities of Strabane, Lifford and their rural hinterlands.

Last year, the Riverine lost out on an €11million under the Peace IV programme due to ‘unforeseen challenges’ in obtaining approval from An Bord Pleanala (ABP) to be completed before the previous funding deadline.
