Sadness at passing of Finn Harps first captain, John Young

Finn Harps’ first senior captain John Young has died, aged 81.

Young, a Derry native, made his debut for Harps in 1968 during the Junior Cup win against Valeview. He went on to lead the team in their historic first match in the League of Ireland against Shamrock Rovers.

Young made 33 appearances for Harps. He left at the end of the 1970/71 season and continued his playing days with Derry City until their withdrawal from the League in 1972.

John, formerly of Back Shore, Culmore, passed peacefully yesterday at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Obiturary Details: Beloved husband of the late Mary, loving father of Hilary, Jackie, Graham, Senga, Christine, Nicky and the late Therese and John, a dear and loving grandfather. Dear brother of Sally, Mary, Catherine and Michael.

John will be reposing at his home 9 Ballynagard Crescent, Culmore on Thursday 7th. November 2024 from 7:00 p.m.

Funeral leaving his home on Saturday 9th. November 2024 at 10:20 a.m. to Sacred Heart Church, Muff, Co. Donegal, for Requiem Mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery.

Family time please from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 a.m.
