Arranmore student Mia Baikie always wanted to care for people when they needed it most, which is why she decided to study nursing at ATU Donegal.

Mia, a past pupil of Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada, had a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in General Nursing as her first choice on her CAO.

Her decision was further cemented after a visit to the Letterkenny campus Open Day in 2022, where she toured the facilities and met with a first-year nursing lecturer.

“I felt reassured that I was selecting the correct course as my top choice because they gave me a clear sense of what the course would involve,” Mia said.

Mia’s journey has been supported by the Ireland Healthcare Scholarship Program from United Health Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Optum Ireland’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group.

The scholarship promotes diversity in higher education by funding young people studying primary or specialised care, or emerging health care technologies.

Now in her third year, Mia is actively applying her classroom knowledge in real-world settings through work placements.

“The experience I have gained has been amazing,” she said. “I have worked in the maternity department, community hospitals, and with public health nurses, between different settings.

“My overall experience of studying at ATU Donegal has been excellent. There are so many facilities available to students including The Curve, Students Union, clubs and societies and the lecturers are always there to give us the help and support we need throughout the year.”

If you are thinking about planning your future at ATU Donegal, visit the Open Day on Thursday 14 November (9.30am to 1pm) on the Letterkenny campus.

This event will give prospective students the opportunity to meet with ATU’s Academic and Student Support Teams.

Take a campus tour of the university, meet current ATU students and explore what ATU Donegal has to offer.

The event will feature 10 Department overview talks, along with talks on student life, scholarships, and accommodation. There will also be a careers advice stand.
