A free lunch event to help the local community to learn, connect, and take action on climate change is being held at Buncrana Community Library next week.
The event, ‘Conversations towards Action: Climate Change’ is designed to bring people together to address their concerns about climate change and potential steps they can take in their own lives.
It is being organised by ChangeMakers Donegal of the Inishowen Development Partnership to mark Friends of the Earth Climate Justice Day of Action and will take place in Buncrana Library on Tuesday, November 19th from 1pm – 2.30pm.
The event will start with a homemade winter soup lunch from The Corner Deli & White Oaks Organic Farm for attendees to underline the positive climate impact of eating organic local and seasonal food.
Myra McAuliffe (pictured above), Project Coordinator at ChangeMakers Donegal, said the event’s idea is to bring the global issue of climate change to a local level and hopefully inspire tangible actions.
“With climate events in places like Spain and Bangladesh playing out on our screens, climate change can still often feel distant,” said Myra.
“We hope to bring people together to explore the connection between climate change and inequality. The wealthiest contribute the most to environmental harm, while the poorest bear the brunt of its impacts. Our goal is to inspire and motivate individuals to join their community in taking climate action, as collective efforts can lead to meaningful change. There is a vibrant environmental movement in Inishowen, which is encouraging. One of our project’s key roles is to help people connect global issues to their everyday lives, fostering a sense of solidarity,” added Myra.
Following the lunch, there will be a community discussion on how the community can take practical steps toward climate justice. Cara McLoughlin of ChangeMakers Donegal will guide the conversation, pointing attendees toward resources, campaigns, and initiatives they can pursue as we head toward a general election.
“With the General Election coming up on November 29, this is a great time for local people to take action by calling on their elected representatives to focus more on climate change,” added Myra.
The event will also feature the launch of Africa Adapting, a new photo exhibition by Changemakers’ partner Self Help Africa.
This compelling photo exhibition showcases how African communities are adapting to the challenges posed by climate change. Visitors to Buncrana Library on the day will have the chance to explore firsthand the stories of these communities and reflect on the global scale of climate justice.
