Fears over deteriorating state of old Milford Hotel

Donegal County Council is set to inspect the old Milford Hotel Building to assess potential safety risks with the structure.

The iconic property, which lies vacant in the town centre, has been up for sale for years awaiting regeneration.

Independent Councillor Declan Meehan told the council this week that the deteriorating state of the building is not just an “eyesore” but also potentially unsafe in its current state.

“I am asking the council to assess the level of deterioration, the condition of the building, and what, if any, risk it poses to public safety,” he said at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Cllr Meehan cited the recent demolition of buildings at Market Square in Letterkenny as an example of decisive action by the council.

On the Milford building, he said: “To look at it from a layman’s point of view, the chimney structure on the internal wall looks particularly precarious, and there has been deterioration over the last number of years.”

“I would like to see at least for the exact condition of the building to be established.”

A response from Donegal County Council said that they have been in direct contact with the property owner regarding the condition of the property. The Council has scheduled to undertake an initial visual inspection of the property in the coming week. This assessment will advise what further communication will be made towards the owners.
