Donegal Green Party calls on others to run ‘poster free’ election campaigns

The Donegal Green party say they will be running a poster-free General Election campaign.

Their candidate, Letterkenny’s Dr. Nuala Carr, has said that postering is wasteful, polluting and a hazard to the public.

Speaking from Brussels, where she was attending a conference on offshore wind energy, Dr. Carr slammed the use of election posters.

She said “They take up a large part of the expense of any campaign, and that this favours the large parties with large budgets over smaller parties and independents.

“Posters are a hazard when they get in the way of road signage and traffic lights. Also they are a nuisance to pedestrians when they are low, near the pavement.

“They are especially dangerous for visually impaired people and are unnecessary, as candidates have ample opportunities to introduce themselves and their policies through flyers and mailshots.”

Nuala also pointed out that other countries do not use postering the way we do in Ireland.

In France, for example, there are specially erected election billboards, where each party is given a fair share of space, and no postering is allowed anywhere else.

The Donegal Green Party has called on other candidates follow their example and stop this wasteful practice.
