Donegal County Council has been shortlisted for the prestigious Local Authority of the Year Award at this year’s Chambers Ireland’s Excellence in Local Government Awards.

The awards ceremony will take place in Dublin on Thursday 21 November and Donegal County Council is one of just three local authorities that have been shortlisted for this top award.

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Niamh Kennedy says she is thrilled to see Donegal County Council named as one of the top three local authorities in Ireland.

She added “I am thrilled to see Donegal County Council as one of the country’s top local authorities and this really does speak to the relentless work that Councillors and Council staff do day in and day out for the people of Donegal.

“We are lucky to have such a positive and ‘can-do’ attitude in Donegal and while we face many challenges we are never shy about putting Donegal and the people of Donegal first.”

John G. McLaughlin Chief Executive of Donegal County Council also welcomed this recognition.

He said “This is a great reflection on the work of the Council and the ambitious approach that the Council has taken over the last number of years across a range of areas. This includes investments in economic and enterprise development, housing capital build, urban and rural regeneration, roads, greenways and active travel, climate action, social inclusion and community development and as well as an extensive cultural development programme.

“It also speaks to the innovation and creativity of our members and staff and to the collaborative approach that we take by working with a whole range of partners and stakeholders in delivering various projects and initiatives”.

Excellence in Local Government Awards are held annually and are hosted by Chambers Ireland. A number of other Donegal County Council projects have also been shortlisted in different categories including: the Energy Retrofit Programme in Climate Change category; Sound! Soundtrack Film Festival in Festival of the Year category; Model Beach Accessibility to improve Health and Well Being – A Strategic Approach in Health & Wellbeing category; The Wonder of Weave – A Showcase of Irish & Scottish Tweed in Heritage and Built Environment category, Food Coast Donegal in Promoting Economic Development category and the Burtonport & Arranmore – Harbour to Island Regeneration in Supporting Sustainable Communities category.

The results will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday 21 November 2024 from 7.30pm.
