Freezing overnight temperatures and a sprinkling of snow has left some roads in Donegal in treacherous conditions this morning.

Motorists are asked to exercise extreme caution when traveling.

Overnight temperatures plunged to as low as -4 in parts of the county, the coldest in the country.

However, Donegal escaped the heaviest of the snowfall which struck other parts of the country.

Galway and Mayo was badly hit with heavy snowfalls.

Gardai are asking people to take their time traveling to work and while leaving children to school.

Roads were gritted last night and early this morning but many secondary roads remain untreated.

The cold snap is top continue until tomorrow.
