Cllr Jordan calls for flood relief plans to be expedited after South Donegal flooding

Sinn Fein Councillor and General Election candidate Noel Jordan has called for planned flood relief schemes across South Donegal to be expedited.

It’s after severe flooding across Killybegs, as well as in parts of Donegal Town.

Cllr Jordan says that while flood prevention schemes have been developed, he is asking the Office of Public Works to expedite their implementation.

“Last night’s flooding in Killybegs, Donegal Town and the Frosses area is yet another example of how serious progress needs to be made on the delivery of flood prevention in south Donegal,” Cllr Jordan said in a statement.

“Yet again, we have seen the devastation caused by flooding in the region.”

“What must happen now is that the OPW fast-track their flood relief schemes for the area and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment must open up – as they have done previously – their Emergency Humanitarian Scheme to help people and businesses affected. I have written to the OPW and the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment asking them to do just that.”

Cllr Jordan also says that it is unacceptable that the same areas are being flooded again and again, despite plans being in place for flood prevention.

“We must prevent this from happening again. It’s simply not acceptable that this has become a regular occurrence. More needs to be done”

“There are also great fears for further flooding this evening with the council and services continuing to work to prevent further damage being caused.”
