South Donegal needs its own Sports SuperDome, Fine Gael General Election candidate John McNulty has said.

The GAA coach and manager says an indoor multi-sport facility like the one in Mayo would be a massive boost for all sports in the county.

A smaller dome structure is planned as part of the ATU Letterkenny sports campus funded by Government.

Mr McNulty says another indoor dome structure is needed in the south of the county.

“I have been to Connacht GAA dome in Bekan and seen the dome there, providing all-year-round indoor facilities. It’s an incredible facility,” said Mr McNulty, the Donegal Senior Ladies Manager.

“I have spoken to former Minister Michael Ring who provided two-thirds of the €3.1M funding for the facility via Government funds.

“I was encouraged to hear what Michael had to say and I believe a similar facility in south Donegal can be done.

“I think it should be open to all sports to use and I think I can bring all organisations together to help get it off the ground.

“We live in a country which is seeing the effects of climate change and unfortunately our weather is getting wetter, so we are going to need more and more all-weather facilities.

“The Sports Campus at ATU Letterkenny is going to be a first-class facility. I believe a Sports SuperDome in the Donegal Town area will compliment that offering – and become a great regional venue for all field sports.

“It could also be a great concert venue too.”

The Fine Gael candidate says he has the ambition and drive to see it through.

“I want to be a voice inside a Fine Gael Government, driving the need for funding to get a great project like this off the ground,” said Mr McNulty.

“Michael Ring was a great Minister when it came to funding facilities right across Donegal. I wished him all the best on his retirement from politics and thanked him for the tens of millions of euro he pumped into Donegal during his time in Government.

“Wouldn’t it be wonderful for Donegal to have its own Sports SuperDome; which could be used by our county teams as well as local sports clubs.

“It’s an ambitious dream right now; but no-one would work harder in the next Dáil to make it a reality. That’s why I’m asking the people of Donegal to vote for me – John McNulty – so Donegal has a voice inside the next government.”
