Popular Letterkenny man John Wallace says he is looking forward to getting back to work after being boosted by the support of the community following a devastating fire.

John, a long-standing team member at Cosgrove’s Centra (formerly Kelly’s) at Mountain Top, lost his home and all of his belongings in a fire on Wednesday night.

John thankfully escaped injury in the blaze. He is currently staying with family and is in good spirits despite his great loss.

His colleagues at Cosgrove’s have quickly rallied around him to set up a GoFundMe campaign, which received an amazing €21,000 in donations overnight.

Hundreds of people rushed to support John, who is known as a friend to all.

One of the campaign organisers said: “The whole team at Mountain Top is so appreciative of the amount of contributions from everyone in the community for getting behind John in his time of need.

“The money will be going towards getting a roof over his head again, getting him furniture and clothing.

“John himself is extremely grateful and appreciative and will be back at work on Monday.”

Martin added that John said he is looking forward to greeting customers once more and doing what he does best.

“We told John to take all the time he needs and that the work will be fine,” said Martin. “But his determination to come back is a credit to him and his love for the job.”
