Meehan welcomes proposed Social Housing for Milford and Kilmacrennan

Councillor Declan Meehan has welcomed plans by Donegal County Council to bring forward two new social housing projects in the Milford Electoral Area.

One development consists of 12 units in Rossgarrow, Milford, which would be within walking distance of the town. The other consists of 20 units in Kilmacrennan next to the existing Ard na Glaise estate. Both developments, if approved and progressed, would be built on council-owned land.

“Both of these developments are very welcome in an electoral area which has seen little to no progress on new social housing for well over a decade” Cllr Meehan said.

“Housing was my number one priority on the campaign trail earlier this year, and since getting elected I have used every opportunity to raise the need for more social housing in the Milford electoral area. I am delighted to see these two projects progressing significantly with an ambitious delivery date for the end of 2026, if all goes according to plan.”

Both developments will be built to universal design, making the units accessible to those with additional mobility needs, those with disabilities, and elderly residents. These proposed 32 units will be added to the ten already planned for Tamney, which would be a significant investment in social housing across the electoral area.

“We know the need for social housing in the Milford Electoral Area is very great with 238 families on the waiting list currently,” Cllr Meehan added.

“These three developments won’t be a silver bullet to that great need, but it is an important improvement on what we were faced with a few months ago. The hope is that infrastructural issues, such as water provision and supply, can be sufficiently addressed to allow these to progress over the coming months.”

He also took the opportunity to thank the staff in the Housing Capital section of Donegal County Council for progressing these sites very quickly over the past few months, and for their continuing work to get them over the line.
