Passengers on a Bus Eireann Expressway bus were left shaken after the bus careered off the road on Sunday night.
One person received minor injuries in the incident involving the overnight Route 32 bus, which departed Letterkenny at 1.45am on 1st December.
A number of passengers missed flights due to the significant delay.
Letterkenny businessman Heera Bisht was on the bus with his wife and baby when the panic unfolded near Monaghan.
“I was half asleep when suddenly people were shouting and screaming,” he told Donegal Daily.
“The moment I opened my eyes the bus was moving from one side to another in the middle of the road.”
Heera describes the bus leaving the road and going onto an embankment.
“We were lucky that the bus didn’t collide with another oncoming vehicle,” he said.
Bus Eireann did not state the cause of the collision when contacted.
Heera did not see the cause either, but photos he took that night show significant damage to the bus windscreen.
Approximately 20 passengers were put on a replacement vehicle an hour and a half later. Heera and his family were among those to miss early morning flights from Dublin Airport.
A spokesperson from Bus Eireann said the company is investigating how this accident occurred, “as per standard procedure for such an incident”.
“Local emergency services and Bus Éireann personnel attended the scene. One passenger was taken to hospital as a precaution and was released a few hours later.”
“The safety of our passengers, staff and the public is of paramount importance to Bus Éireann. We would like to thank An Garda Síochána and the emergency services for their swift response to the incident,” the statement said.
