Thousands of Donegal customers could be without power for ‘a number of days’

A “significant number” of homes and businesses across Donegal could be without power “for a number of days” as a result of damage caused by Storm Darragh, ESB Networks has said.

Around 2,000 customers are without power in the county and the ESB said that it will work to bring power to as many customers as possible, before mobilising again at first light.

It said that some customers could be without supply for “approximately a week” because of the scale and severity of the damage in places.

The ESB is currently dealing with 70 faults around Donegal (see main pic), caused by Friday night’s storm.

The National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM), Met Éireann and other stakeholders met this morning to discuss the impact of Storm Darragh.

The NDFEM said there has been significant disruption to electricity supply throughout the country – with a greater impact than Storm Ophelia.

The NDFEM said the Defence Forces were assisting in repairing damage to the electricity network.

At the height of the storm, around 400,000 homes and businesses nationally were without power.

Mobile and broadband provider, eir said Donegal and Mayo were the hardest-hit counties in terms of outages, but service disruptions were felt nationwide.

“More than 35,000 broadband faults, 20,000 fixed voice issues and approximately 15% of mobile network site outages have been registered,” it said.
