Mourne Antiques & Jewellery in Letterkenny, now 40 years in business, is proud to be a cherished part of Christmas for many.

As another milestone year comes to a close, owner Frances Spears is taking time to look back on the shop’s journey which is a testament to her mother’s skill and spirit.

From its beginnings in Teresa Spears’ Lifford front room to its current location on Main Street Letterkenny, Mourne Antiques, much like its treasures, has stood the test of time.

Founded by Teresa Spears in 1984, her story is remarkable. At the age of 60, Teresa retired from teaching, learned to drive, took a China restoration course in London, and then launched her own business called ‘Diamond Curios’. Sadly, Teresa passed away five years later. Her daughter Frances took the reins, determined to keep her mother’s dream alive.

Frances, a respected jewellery stockist and skilled antique hunter, has overseen the shop’s growth through six relocations.

The store’s name pays homage to the River Mourne, a nod to its first permanent location in Strabane.

Mourne Antiques has called Letterkenny home since 1992, currently occupying a beautiful former bank building at No. 45 Main Street.

While Frances’ stock maintains a traditional feel, she keeps a pulse on current trends.

“40 years is a long time of thinking about what to buy for Christmas,” says Frances.

“It’s all about identifying the trends and searching for what people will love and cherish,” Frances says.

“Christmas is a special time,” she continues. “It’s filled with joy, but also a time to remember loved ones.”

Mourne Antiques gets the best of everything at Christmastime.

“People are in their happy moment when they find the right thing and know it’s for somebody they love,” Frances says of festive shoppers.

Frances counts herself lucky to have built a loyal customer base over the years. “The number of family members I’ve got since Strabane, it’s amazing to meet grandparents and their grandchildren who love the fact we are still here with a huge selection,” she shares.
