The sad passing has been announced of renowned fiddler and Inishowen traditional music icon, Dinny McLaughlin (Whiteharra).

Late of Shandrum near Buncrana, Dinny was a hugely respected musician, teacher, dancer, composer and all-round showman who inspired many to keep local traditions alive on the peninsula.

Born in 1935 into a musical family, he honed his skills from a young age.

Dinny’s influence extended far beyond Inishowen. He performed with renowned groups like Aileach and impressed on the Late Late Show. As a dedicated teacher, he mentored numerous talented musicians across Donegal and Derry, inspiring generations of traditional artists. Among his fiddle pupils were Liz Doherty, Ciaran Tourish, Roisin and Damian Harrigan and renowned tin whistler, Michael Carey.

Dinny McLaughlin was a true icon of Donegal’s traditional music scene.

His life and legacy were celebrated in the RTÉ documentary, “The Pied Piper of Shandrum.” Dr. Liz Doherty, a former student, further honoured his memory with the 2015 book, “Dinny McLaughlin: From Barefoot Days (A Life of Music, Song, and Dance in Inishowen).”

Among the tributes today are The Henry Girls from Malin, who wrote: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dinny McLaughlin, a true musical legend. His contributions to the tradition will never be forgotten, here in Inishowen and far beyond. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, and we are so grateful for all he taught us over the years. Rest in peace, Dinny. You will always be remembered.”
