Bríd’s 366-day challenge for Donegal Cancer Flights to continue despite mishap!

A well-known West Donegal woman has vowed to complete her year-long walking campaign for Donegal Cancer Flights & Services despite a little mishap!

Bríd ‘Winnie’ Sweeney, who lives in Loch an lúir, has pledged to walk every day – rain, hail or shine – each day of 2024, including the extra leap year day!

However, with just five days to go, she ended up in the Emergency Department at St James Hospital in Dublin last night.

“Well, everyone, this isn’t how I planned to wrap up my holiday,” she explained in a post to her many Facebook followers.

“Last night, during a short walk back to the car, I tripped on some cobblestones and ended up breaking the humerus bone in my elbow. It’s safe to say it’s sore and pretty awkward right now. I was x-rayed and checked out by lovely doctors at the St. James. Unfortunately these things happen.”

Ouch! But Bríd’s 366-day challenge for Donegal Cancer Flights will continue!

But, Bríd stressed, will be back on the road today again.

“That said, the show must go on! We’re still planning to complete our final walk for the challenge on the 31st of December. I’ll probably be taking things at a slower pace, but I’m looking forward to seeing you all then.”

Donegal Cancer Flights and Services is based in Ionad Naomh Padraig in Gweedore. This charity provides community support for cancer patients, with flights from Donegal Airport to Dublin, as well as ground transport to appointments in Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Derry and Letterkenny. This charity also provides free counselling services, support and pamper days for cancer patients and their families.

“Unfortunately, we all know someone with cancer, those in remission or receiving treatment. Any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated and will benefit cancer patients and their families,” Bríd added.
