Hundreds are expected to converge on Crossroads, Killygordon, tomorrow for the second walk-run in memory of the late Joe Carlin and Andy Scanlon.

The charity event, in aid of youth development at five local clubs, will take place at 12 noon on New Year’s Day.

Andrew (Andy) passed away suddenly aged 56 on December 13, 2020, while Joe lost his battle with cancer less than a year later, on September 18, 2021, at just 54 years-of-age.

Both men were neighbours, lifelong friends and fierce competitors on the athletics circuit around the county and beyond.

The late Andy Scanlon (L) and Joe Carlin battling it out at an inter-firms race in Letterkenny.

Their friends and families decided to organise this event in their memory again this year, for the first time since 2023.

“We want to give everyone the chance to start the New Year afresh with Joe and Andy in mind,” said chief organiser, Declan Carlin.

“You will also be helping to support youth development at Curragh Athletic, Markievicz Camogie Club, Red Hughs GAA, Setanta and the Three Rivers Badminton Club. Over 1,000 turned out in 2023 and helped raise a fantastic €5,300 for the local young people.”

It should be noted that this will not be a clocked/timed race and is hoped to be nothing more than a leisurely walk or run. You can register from 10.30am at the CAKE Centre (F93 RWT3), Killygordon. Participants can then proceed to the starting line, just below Topline McCreary’s.

The 5K route will take in a loop of the scenic Monellan Wood, before returning to the finish line at the CAKE Centre. Free Entry – donations only.

Tea and refreshments will be served afterwards in the centre where a raffle will also take place with a number of superb hampers/vouchers up for grabs!

To enter for the draw, just register at the CAKE Centre. Donations can also be made via the following Revolut link: https://revolut.me/declanraj2

Ample parking will be available at The CAKE Centre, Dromore School and at the various car parks at Crossroads village.
