Donegal Electric Vehicle sales down 31% in 2024 – SIMI

There was an increase in the number of new cars sold in Donegal last year, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

A total of 2,765 new cars were purchased here last year, up 7.25% from 2023.

This was the second largest increase in Ireland, following Leitrim at 8.46%.

However, there was a 31.8% decrease in the number of electric vehicles purchased in Donegal.

Last year 208 new EVs were purchased in the county, down from 305 in 2023.

Nationally, the number of new cars bought in 2024 was 121,195, a slight decrease of 1% compared to 2023.

17,459 new electric cars were registered last year, a decrease of 24% in the registrations seen the previous year.

Petrol remained the most popular engine type for 2024, while Electric, Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid accounted for over 45% of the market.

  • Petrol – 30%
  • Diesel -23%
  • Hybrid – 21%
  • Electric – 14%
  • Plug-in Hybrid – 10%

According to SIMI’s official figures, automatic transmissions now account for 66% of the market share, while manual transmissions have declined to 33.80%.
