Met Éireann has issued a series of weather alerts for the first weekend of 2025.
Donegal and a large swathe of the country will be under a status yellow snow-ice warning from 5pm Saturday until 5pm Sunday.
Road users are warned to expect hazardous travelling conditions due to snow and ice.
There is a Status Orange warning for snow and ice for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Clare, Limerick and Tipperary with “significant snowfall” expected.
The cold snap will see sleet and snow in many areas, according to Met Eireann, and forecasters have not yet ruled out potential school closures on Monday.
Gerry Murphy told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that temperatures will remain low on Sunday and will then it will be followed by a very sharp frost.
“So there are likely to be accumulations of snow in places on Monday morning coupled with a very severe frost as well, so there is the possibility that schools may not open, but that will become more apparent as we go through the weekend,” he said.
