Donegal’s ‘Cultural Calendar’ to celebrate diversity

Donegal County Council has announced the introduction of its new Cultural Calendar, an initiative developed as part of the EU BELONG pilot project and aligned with the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Inclusion Strategy for Donegal 2021-2026.

This calendar highlights key cultural and religious events celebrated by BME communities across the county and represents a significant step in fostering inclusivity and cultural understanding.

The Cultural Calendar responds to Action 24 of the Black and Minority Ethnic Inclusion Strategy, which calls for identifying and acknowledging significant events in the cultural calendars of Black and Minority Ethnic communities.

By raising awareness of these events, the initiative aims to promote a sense of belonging and strengthen community cohesion across Donegal.

The calendar reflects the diversity of Donegal’s communities. It provides an opportunity for political leaders, organisations, and residents to celebrate and engage with the rich cultural tapestry of the county.

John G. McLaughlin Chief Executive of Donegal County Council said: “This Cultural Calendar highlights our continued commitment to delivering the Black and Minority Ethnic Inclusion Strategy. By recognising and celebrating the cultural and religious events of our communities, we take a step towards building a more inclusive, cohesive, and welcoming Donegal.”

The development of the calendar was informed by consultations with Black and Minority Ethnic communities, ensuring it represents the events most meaningful to them.

It is hoped that this initiative will not only raise awareness but also inspire greater engagement with these important celebrations.
