Fine Gael Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh has been chosen by Taoiseach Simon Harris to contest election to the Seanad.

Cllr Kavanagh has been nominated to seek a seat on the Labour Panel, according to the Irish Times.

His nomination comes from a shortfall in the required number of inside nominees for the panel.

Cllr Kavanagh was first elected to Donegal County Council in May 2014, having served on the Letterkenny Town Council from 2009-2014.

Cllr Kavanagh, a native of Letterkenny, has plenty of background in labour relations, having been involved in the union during his time working in the Information Technology Department in Letterkenny General Hospital.

He has a degree in Health Administration and a Certificate in Public Relations.

A general election for the Seanad must take place no later than 90 days after the dissolution of the Dáil. As the 33rd Dáil was dissolved on 8 November 2024, therefore, the Seanad election must take place no later than 6 February 2024.
