An Inishowen school principal has advanced his career prospects through a Master of Arts in Learning and Teaching at Atlantic Technological University (ATU).

Rory Reynolds, Principal of St. Mura’s NS Tooban, took the brave step to go back to education after 20 years, and says the decision was more than worthwhile: “The programme offered a fantastic opportunity to strengthen my leadership and management skills while also advancing my career prospects”.

Rory greatly valued the local availability of the Master of Arts in Learning and Teaching, which is currently open for applications for a January 2025 start.

The opportunity to complete a Master’s degree in his “hometown” was a major draw for him. The flexible structure of the course played a key role in enabling him to successfully balance his professional and personal commitments.

The course had a transformative effect on Rory’s understanding and expertise. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “Ultimately, I wanted to enhance my professional development, deepen my knowledge, and gain expertise in the field, as it had been almost 20 years since I completed my undergraduate degree.”

One aspect that pleasantly surprised Rory and proved to be of great value was the opportunity to network with teachers from primary, secondary, and third-level education. He said, “One of the unexpected opportunities this programme offered was the chance to network, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. It gave me valuable insights into other roles and different approaches to teaching and learning.”

The modules were deeply relevant to the classroom, integrating modern tools like Zotero and Google Scholar to enhance learning. Modules highlighted by Rory included Learning and Teaching with Creativity, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in Education and Leadership and Management. The Leadership and Management module, in particular, equipped Rory with invaluable skills that have greatly supported him in his role as Principal at St. Mura’s. Rory emphasized, “This programme provided me with the opportunity to stay abreast of the constantly evolving education system and engage with a professional community to discuss the challenges and issues affecting all levels of education.” This was extremely beneficial to his career and day-to-day work life, allowing him to apply new insights and strategies directly to his role.

Watch Rory share his story:

Alumni Fee Reduction:
