Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair maths whizz Rónán Ó Dochartaigh has won a top prize at the 2025 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

Rónán, the son of Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty and Róisín Doherty, won the CSO special award this evening for his project investigating data.

Rónán’s individual project asked: “An oibríonn dlí Benford le tacar Sonraí in Éirinn?” – “Does Benford’s law work on Irish datasets?”

The BTYSTE awards were handed out to a full house of finalists and teachers at the RDS Dublin, and to audiences around the world online.

Proud dad Pearse shared the moment of Rónán’s major achievement and paid tribute to Rónán’s teacher Susan Ní Loinsigh:

Rónán, a junior entrant in this year’s exhibition, was in good company with three other projects from his school. There are 21 projects from students across Donegal at this year’s exhibition, with eight awards coming home to the hills.

The overall winners of the competition this year were Kerry sisters Ciara, Saoirse and Laoise Murphy who won for their project called ‘Aid Care Treat’, a medical assistance app designed to support emergency healthcare response.
