Gardaí encourage reporting incidents involving quads on public roads

Donegal Gardaí are urging members of the public to report incidents involving quads on public roads to them.

Garda Grainne Doherty was responding to a query during yesterday’s Garda Community Slot broadcast.

A member of the public said they witnessed a young boy on a quad bike purposely sliding and skidding on an icy road in Raphoe last week.

“I know for sure this boy is only 11 or 12 years of age, he was on the main road in the Town Parks area, leading to Mongorry,” they said.

“I was quite shocked at how dangerous this was, not just for him but for any motorists who were on that road, it was difficult enough to control a vehicle as it was 9pm and the road was slippery.”

The person also questioned the ‘irresponsibility of the parents’ who were ‘egging him on’.

In response, Garda Doherty said that, ideally, the person should have immediately reported the incident to them.

“I would encourage the listener who sent this question in to make contact with Gardaí to report the matter so that it may be investigated,” she said.

“Quads are powerful machines that have the potential to severely, or even fatally, injure someone. If used on a public road, they are subject to the same rules that apply to other mechanically propelled vehicles.”

The quads must be registered, taxed, roadworthy and they must comply with standard road regulations. The driver must also hold the relevant driving licence and be fully insured to drive the vehicle.
