There is immense shock and sadness in Inishowen following the sudden passing of David Magee, the Manager of Fort Dunree Military Museum and a highly respected tourism advocate.

Mr Magee from Buncrana passed away suddenly this week at the age of 49.

David gave over 22 years of service to the company and was a key part of the team leading a major multi-million transformation of the visitor experience.

David was also a key contact between the museum and the local community, supporting groups who made use of the former military site.

Fort Dunree Museum has announced it will closed to the public until Monday 27th January as a mark of respect for Mr Magee who was “a dear colleague, friend and facility manager”.

Local councillor Jack Murray has paid tribute to Mr Magee as a “gentleman”.

“He was a civil, decent good man who really cared about his community. He really cared about the betterment of his community and was very passionate about Fort Dunree,” said Cllr Murray.

“Any conversation we had was focused on what could be done for Fort Dunree, its potential and what he would like to see happen. He was absolutely committed to that.

“Our thoughts are with his family on their tragic loss. It is a great loss for the Buncrana and Inishowen community and Fort Dunree.

“David was such a passionate and capable advocate for Fort Dunree. Although quiet and mild-mannered he was held in very high regard by so many people.”

The Wild Inishowen Club has also extended their sincere and heartfelt condolences to David’s wife, Monica, his family, friends, colleagues, and the Board of Directors at Fort Dunree. “Thinking of you all during this incredibly difficult time,” the club stated.
