Parts of Donegal could remain without power well into next week, due to ESB equipment shortages.
The stark message was issued by Glenties Councillor Michael McClafferty, as parts of West Donegal may have to wait until the middle of next week at least to be reconnected.
The long delay in repairs is due to a severe shortage of equipment to hand for ESB crews, who nationwide have been faced with an unprecedented repair job after Storm Eowyn knocked over 700,000 homes off the grid.
Despite a mammoth effort from ESB repair crews working around the clock to reconnect 400,000 properties – 340,000 homes are still without power, including tens of thousands in County Donegal.
“The ESB is experiencing equipment shortages in certain areas – heavy-duty parts, transformers, poles, and other logistical challenges could take several days to resolve,” Cllr Michael McClafferty said.
“In the Creeslough area alone, and extending back to Falcarragh and Gortahork, restoration efforts may take a couple of days or more, depending on how long it takes to source the required equipment. This is the reality for various locations along the lines.”
Cllr McClafferty has urged any household without power, especially those that may have elderly or vulnerable residents, to contact their individual electricity provider to be registered on a priority list for repairs.
The Councillor also urged the public to be patient with all those working to restore power, water and other essential services.
“This is a crisis in Donegal, and we kindly ask for your patience with ESB workers, Water and Council staff, Gardaí, and all emergency and frontline workers involved,” the Councillor said.
“This is a serious situation for everyone.”
“Light a candle and say a prayer for everyone’s safety, and above all, please remain calm.”
