Mini earthquake recorded near Donegal villages – did you notice?

Glen Lough in Donegal was rattled by a tiny earthquake yesterday morning, new data reveals.

The -0.3 negative magnitude quake was picked up by the Irish National Seismic Network in the early hours of Monday 27th January at 2.53am.

While it was very small in strength, the quake was registered at a shallow depth of 4km near Derriscleigh, with the nearest villages being Glen, Termon and Creeslough.

It was a lucky discovery for the nearby Raspberry Shake seismometer stations, as power had only just been restored after being offline since last Friday’s storm.

Donegal is known to experience earthquakes from time to time due to major fault zones stretching across the county.

Two of Ireland’s largest onshore earthquakes on record have happened in Donegal – 2.5 magnitude quake occurred on 26 January 2012 on the Fanad peninsula and another earthquake of the same magnitude was also felt near Glenveagh National Park on 6 May 2023.

The earthquake is plotted by time and distance on all 10 shakes 〰
