Councillors concern over trees along roads after death of young Lifford man

Councillors have raised a number of issues over the dangers of trees along public roads following the death of a young Donegal man last week.

Kacper Dudek (20), a native of Poland who was raised in Lifford, lost his life early last Friday morning when he was travelling home from his workplace at Zeus in Letterkenny.

He tragically died on the N14 shortly after meeting a roadblock caused by a fallen tree. He had turned his car around, only to be struck by another tree at Feddyglass, near Raphoe.

Mr Dudek’s death was raised during a discussion on road safety at this morning’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).

Cllr Martin Harley questioned the wisdom of planting trees along new road developments in light of the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Cllr Patrick McGowan demanded to know who was legally responsible if a fallen tree damaged property or caused an accident.

“If a tree falls down and damages a road, private property or causes an injury or death, who is liable,” he asked.

“We need that (response) in black and white – we need legal advice.”

Mr Dudek’s funeral mass will now take place at St Patrick’s Church, Murlog, Lifford tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

A fundraiser has been launched by family friend, Monika, to help support Kacper’s family with funeral costs and other unexpected expenses.
