Murroe National School, Dunfanaghy, is set to receive hundreds of new books for their students this year thanks to the Late Late Toy Show Appeal.
Designed by national charity and arts organisation, Children’s Books Ireland, the ‘Every Child A Reader’ programme is a year-long support provided to select schools which helps to foster a love of reading in their students and wider school community.
As part of this project, each school will have their own dedicated Champion of Reading, an author or illustrator who will host a series of live workshops throughout the year with students. Artist Kim Sharkey, whose book Mamaí Gé featured on the recent Late Late Toy Show, will be working with the Murroe NS children for six weeks.
School principal, Anne Sweeney, said they are ‘absolutely thrilled and honored’ to be selected for the Every Child a Reader programme.
“This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for us to further strengthen our commitment to fostering literacy and ensuring every student has the support they need to become confident, capable readers,” Ms Sweeney said.
“For our staff, this program represents a valuable chance to enhance their professional development and to be part of a wider, meaningful effort to improve outcomes for all our students.” Anne Sweeney principal.
