A van driver was arrested in the Carndonagh area yesterday after their driving alerted the suspicions of gardaí.

Gardaí from Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were patrolling the area early yesterday morning when they noticed the van being driven “in a poor manner”.

The driver of the van was then arrested on suspicion of drink driving and the van was seized as it was not insured.

Also in the early hours of Monday morning, Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were operating a checkpoint in Moville when a car failed to stop. Follow-up enquiries led them to the car in question in Carndonagh. The car was seized as it was not insured.

Both drivers now face a court appearance.

Gardaí have this morning concluded a major roads policing operation for the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday weekend.

During the first four days of the operation, there were three fatalities as a result of traffic collisions on Irish roads. This brings the total number of fatalities on Irish roads this year to 14.
