Donegal County Council has procured a contractor to carry out road markings in the Letterkenny-Milford MD soon.
A programme of work has been prepared to tackle faded road lining across the region.
The issue of poor markings was highlighted to the council by Cllr Donal Coyle, who called for the reinstatement of all lines that have disappeared.
Cllr Coyle said some serious accidents in Letterkenny town could potentially have been avoided by clearer markings.
“In the last two years there have been few lines put on roads anywhere,” Cllr Coyle told Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkeny-Milford MD.
He cited the Listillion road, where lines were not reinstated after tarring works. He also pointed out the absence of markings at junctions where housing estates connect to main roads.
Cllr Coyle also called for a prominent white stop line on the Wood Road junction with the Cullion Road. “Even though there is a stop sign, for anybody that wouldn’t be aware, they would still think they have the right of way. A big white line would act as a deterrent,” Cllr Coyle said.
In seconding the motion, Cllr Ciaran Brogan said the motion should be taken seriously as it is “the smaller things can reduce accidents”.
David McIIwaine, Senior Executive Roads Engineer, acknowledged the concerns raised. He commented that the council has procured a contractor and is planning a lining programme in the town when weather conditions are more appropriate.
Mr McIIwaine pointed out a particular challenge in Letterkenny town where the high volume of traffic reduces the lifespan of road markings.
“The quantity of road markings to be carried out is dependent on the allocations of funding received,” councillors were told.
