A young man has been left in a critical condition following an early morning assault in Cavan town centre.
Gardaí say the man, aged in his 20s, was rushed to Cavan General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries after the attack.
The incident took place on the Main Street of the town in the early hours of this morning.
No other injuries were reported, and the scene has been cordoned off for a technical examination.
Gardaí are seeking witnesses to the incident to come forward as they have launched an investigation into the shocking assault.
