Donegal speed camera catches 750 drivers in first month

A new static speed camera on the N13 road near Newtowncunningham detected 750 speeding motorists in its first month of operation.

The 750 detections were made between the dates of the official launch of the camera on 20th of December 2024 and the 16th of January 2025.

A 100km/hr speed limit applies on the N13 road between Manorcunningham and Letterkenny.

Drivers caught by the camera are being progressed through the Fixed Charge Notice system.

Another camera on the N17 in Mayo was knocked offline on 31 of December 2024 in an incident of criminal damage. It’s understood that a tractor was driven into the camera.

Last month, Letterkenny Councillor Donal Coyle called for answers from Transport Infrastructure Ireland on why the static cameras that were originally earmarked for the N14 (Letterkenny-Lifford road) at Carrickballydooey were transferred to the N13.

Cllr Coyle said he was told that the TII deemed the N14 unsuitable for the static camera. Following three fatalities on this stretch of the Letterkenny-Lifford road in recent years, Cllr Coyle said that a further explanation was needed.

Cllr Coyle had a motion passed at the January meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD asking the local authority to write to the TII seeking clarity on the change of planned location.
