Safer crossings are in the pipeline for the Glencar area of Letterkenny under active travel proposals.
A public consultation is currently underway for the Circular Road scheme, which seeks to replace the Glencar Roundabout with a signalised junction.
The change is intended to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists to access the routes towards Gaelscoil Adhamháin and the proposed College Road scheme.
Donegal County Council are inviting residents, businesses, and all interested parties to have their say on the proposals for the Circular Road and R940 Ballyraine Road, which are both currently at the Phase 4 (Planning) stage.
Councillor Donal Coyle says there is a need for action on pedestrian safety in the Glencar area.
Speaking at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, Councillor Coyle said the dangers of crossing the Glencar Road before entering the roundabout on the Circular Road cannot be ignored.
He was told that the NTA Active Travel Scheme for the Circular road includes provision for the roundabout replacement and the construction of a raised table pedestrian crossing at the Junction with Willowbrook.
Cllr Coyle welcomed the proposals and said: “Anybody coming up the Circular Road and going down College Road, there is no crossing for them. There is no footpath on the left hand side either. It’s very dangerous.”
Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Cllr Gerry McMonagle welcomed the active travel works as a timely opportunity to put in safe crossing points.
The L-1007-0 Circular Road active travel scheme aims to transform pedestrian and cycle facilities along a 1km long stretch of road between the Hospital Roundabout to the east and the Willowbrook Road junction.
Other proposals for the scheme include a new bus stop at Letterkenny University Hospital and an upgraded (pedestrian/cycle) crossing at the access point.
Plans are also proposed to modify the existing mini roundabout junction at Long Lane to incorporate a signalised junction with cyclist and pedestrian facilities.
