Donegal County Council will formally launch this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge in Dungloe next week.

The event will take place at Ionad Theampall Chróine, An Clochán Liath, on Friday, 28 February, at 7.30pm. An evening of song, dance, drama has been organised and refreshments will be served. All are invited to attend.

The Cathaoirleach of Na Gleannta Municipal District, Cllr John Shéamais Ó Fearraigh, will officially launch the international Irish language festival.

This festival, which promotes the use of Irish language and Irish culture in Ireland and abroad, is the largest celebration of our native language and culture in existence. The festival provides an opportunity for everyone to enjoy the Irish language, from native speakers to learners and those with the cúpla focal.

“We are also delighted to announce that Colm Ferriter (main pic), schoolteacher and renowned broadcaster with Raidió Highland, has been appointed as this year’s Seachtain na Gaeilge Ambassador for Donegal,” Cllr Ó Fearraigh said.

A native of Laghey in south Donegal, he now resides with his family in Gaoth Dobhair. He has spent twelve years working as a presenter and journalist with Raidió Highland. He hosts the programmes Ruaille Buaille, Clár sa Charr among others.

Speaking about his appointment, Mr Ferriter said: “It is a great honour to be this year’s Ambassador for Seachtain na Gaeilge for County Donegal, especially given the tremendous growth in the language in recent times. Take the opportunity to embark on a language journey during Seachtain na Gaeilge”.

Seachtain na Gaeilge will take place from 1 – 17 March and an extensive programme of Irish language events has been jointly arranged by the Council’s Library Service, Rannóg na Gaeilge and other community groups.
