Pope Francis had a “peaceful night” in hospital last night, the Vatican has said.
The Pontiff’s condition was described as critical yesterday after he suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis linked to pneumonia and a complex lung infection.
Pope Francis, who has chronic lung disease, was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on the 14th of February after a week-long bout of bronchitis worsened.
The statement on Saturday said the Pope received “high flows” of oxygen to help him breathe.
“The Holy Father remains alert and spent the day in an armchair, although he is more fatigued than yesterday. At the moment, the prognosis remains guarded,” the update said.
Catholics all over the world are joining in prayer for the Pope.
A prayer shared online by the Raphoe Diocese said: “Let us unite in prayer for Pope Francis, asking God to grant him strength, healing, and comfort during this difficult time. May the Holy Spirit guide his caregivers and bring peace to his heart. We trust in God’s mercy and pray for his swift recovery.
