May 9th is a date that is marked in Peader Mogan’s diary this year.
But instead of patrolling the wings of St Tiernach’s Park in Clones or bombing through defences in Celtic Park, the Donegal star will be swapping the white heat of championship battle for the luscious fairways of Ballybofey and Stranorlar Golf Club for one day only.
The Donegal GAA star was the first to sign up a team for the Deele College Golf Classic, which has been organised by Transition Year student, Conor Callaghan as part of his mini-company project. Mr Mogan, who is a PE teacher in the school will be joined by fellow county player and Deele College colleague Shane O’Donnell in a star-studded four ball, with the other two players yet to be revealed.
The competition will run from 8.00 to 5.40 on Friday May the 9th and the school is hoping for a huge turnout for the event. Conor, who is a keen golfer, decided to use his mini-company as a way to raise money for the school’s extra curricular activities. As a member of the school’s soccer, GAA and golf teams, he and his fellow students will benefit significantly from all the funds raised on the day.
School principal, Mr Joe Boyle says that the event is an important one to help with the running of the varied extra curricular activities that the school offers each year. He also paid tribute to Conor for coming up with the idea and putting the whole thing together.
“Conor is a fabulous student who has shown great initiative in coming up with the idea of a golf classic to raise money for the school’s extra-curricular fund. Conor is a key member of so many teams here in the school and understands what it takes to keep these teams going. He is also a great golfer and he has used his skills to put together an event that the school community is eager to get behind.
“We would encourage as many people in the local community as possible to enter the competition and we would also be urging local businesses to sponsor tees and greens or prizes for the winners. We will be in contact with local businesses in the coming days in the hope that they can support us with this vital fundraiser. I would also like to thank Paul Callaghan for all his help in organising this event.”
Teams of four can be entered by contacting either B&S Golf Club or Deele College with team entry costing €120. Tee sponsorship is €50 and Green sponsorship is also €50. Get in early to book your slot for what promises to be a great day out.
