East Donegal community embraces new sensory pod

A new sensory pod has been installed in St Johnston, providing a calm haven for children and adults with additional needs.

The pod was acquired by the St Johnston and Carrigans Family Resource Centre (FRC), with funding from Tusla, to help people who suffer from sensory overload. Users can sit inside the pod to calm down and regulate with relaxing lighting, sounds and sensations.

St Johnston and Carrigans FRC centre coordinator, Deborah Clawson, has been the driving force behind this project.

After researching the benefits of pods, such as the one in Bundoran Library, Deborah set out to bring the facility to the local community.

The new facility is a welcome addition for children participating in the ‘Deep Roots’ Saturday youth club, designed specifically for those with additional needs, as well as the Stepping Stones community playgroup and the after-school programme.

“It’s a great piece of equipment,” Deborah tells Donegal Daily.

“Children can go in and have some quiet time, read a book, or take time out when things are too overwhelming.”

The pod is now available in the Main Hall in St Johnston Community Centre. Children with additional needs who cannot partake in the centre’s pre-school and after-school activities, such as music and dancing, can sit in and enjoy a calmer environment.

“The underwater capsule theme is mesmerising for kids,” says Deborah. “By having it in the main hall, children can go into the pod and still be a part of a class.”

The FRC is making the pod available for public bookings, free of charge.

Adults with additional needs, as well as non-autistic individuals experiencing stress, anxiety, or the potential for panic attacks, can also pre-book sessions.

Anyone who wishes to use the pod can call the centre to book a time, 074 91 48551, or is welcome to call in person to see it.
