Kilcar Film Festival begins new screening series with powerful Inishowen music doc

After the resounding success of its inaugural edition, the Kilcar International Film Festival is thrilled to launch a regular screening series in the lead-up to its second edition, confirmed for February 2026.

Curated by festival director and acclaimed filmmaker M.A. Littler, this new series will open with the stunning music documentary It’s a Fine Thing to Sing by award-winning director Bob Gallagher.

Presented in collaboration with the Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle, It’s a Fine Thing to Sing is a 60-minute documentary featuring Ian Lynch (Lankum, Fire Draw Near), Ye Vagabonds, and The Henry Girls, who arrange and perform six traditional songs originating from singers in Clonmany and Buncrana: Roseanne McGonigle, Dan McGonigle, Mary Ann Canny, Corney McDaid, and visiting Ardara singer Packie Manus Byrne.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Inishowen, the film weaves together atmospheric archival recordings of the original singers with interviews from today’s Inishowen song community, offering a powerful reflection on tradition, memory, and place.

The screening at Áislann Chill Chartha will be introduced by director Bob Gallagher, and followed by a lively singing session in Evelyn’s Bar in Carrick—a perfect continuation of the spirit of the film.

The first-ever Kilcar International Film Festival, held in February 2025, was a runaway success, achieving 85% occupancy and generating an estimated €15,000 in revenue for local businesses. Its celebration of film, music, language, and maritime heritage struck a powerful chord with attendees from across Ireland, Europe, and North America.

Now returning in February 2026, the festival promises to build on this momentum with even more diverse programming and enhanced facilities. Attendees can look forward to an even broader lineup of filmmakers, musicians, and cinema lovers from around the world
